Welcome Raven Happy Thanks for the Complement Happy

I'm guessing around 20mb, hope it's not too much. I have a 56k so it will takes ages to upload.

Is there somewhere else you could go to upload it faster? Somebody in your country must have high speed connection.

Eircom recently got it (they are the first) but I'm not moving my free connection over to that grossly over priced and crap connection.

Hmm... in Canada, high speed costs about the same as dial-up.

I dont know about Ireland, but Britain is only just starting to get broadband, and just before they released it, some dumb (but very smart companies) made lots of 'good' internet offers which you had to stick to for like a year, if you changed you had to pay like a fine. So I know thats why its not everywhere, but some of my mates have it, one of them went on a weekend school trip to the battlefields of Belgium, and when he got back his parents had got him broadband - I wish I was him - but thereagain id have to do history which I hate - Art rules, but ICT (used to be IT) is not relevant - too much paperwork.

In Canada, dial-up plans are 100 minutes per month for a flat rate, and extra for overtime. High-speed is unlimited minutes for a flat rate. Of Canadian Internet users, 50% are on high-speed. In the USA, only 20% are on high-speed.

Oh, more than that...

On a dial-up 3-5MB is about 1-1/2 Hours, so 20MB would be 4-5 Hours.

No no no. It's not that long. The Bridge Commander Demo was 112 megabytes and it took 8 hours. About 1 & 1/2 hours then.

YEAH RIGHT, 118MB in 8 hours......... oh wait i did 44mb in 4, and that was only because some fluke of nature that let me download at 13k/s (WOW THAT WAS SOOOOOOOOOOOOO COOL) but now on to calcuations, it is only possible to do 11% of you modem speed (don't ask me why) so that meens that the MOST you can get (unless some fluke of nature happens (see above)) is 6.2 kb per second on a 56k. 1MB contains 1,024 kb by 20 for 20 meg = 20,480kb.
Now if you were going at full speed (6.2 bytes per second) it would take: 3303.2258064516129032258064516129 seconds or 55.053763440860215053763440860215 minutes. But scince the chances of getting that much all the time we will use 5kb/s which is 4096 seconds or 69 minutes. WTF I MUST HAVE DONE SOME THING WRONG thats impossible...........

I use a download program called NetAnts, and there was a setting on it that set maximum connection speed, and I set it to 20000. So now, when I download something, not only does it download in 5 parts maximum (5 at the same time but at the same speed), it usually downloads at about this: (in kbps)

5 4 4 6 8 5 5 9 5 2 13 2 0 5 6 5 4 4 4 3 5 8 9 5 4 5 6 3 2 4 1 5 12 and so on...

Yes, ther was a 13 and a 12 in there. It does do that quite often. Once, I even got it to download 25kbps YEAH! , and 20kbps. It downloads at 10 - 20 kbps about every 15 seconds. NetAnts is cool! (www.netants.com I think)

I dunno about that sorta stuff but as I work on effiles, I have to download a lot of files and it doesn't take hours to download a 3-5mb file.

I don't know about Ireland, but when I was on dial-up, my connection was only 45k even though I had a 56k modem. The reason is because that's all the phone lines are capable of handling around here. One guy I talked to who lives across the street from the USA, says he can only get 19k because his phone lines are horrible. This is why you won't see dial-up modems faster than 56k. There's just no point in making them.

Well, netants is only about a few small megabytes, and there are settings in it to adjust the maximum download speed. I dont think you can change it externally.

Why then, it a 56k modem is meant to download 56kbps, WHY DOESNT IT!?????!!!!!!?!!??!?!???!?

A 56k modem can't connect at 56k because the phone lines can't handle it. DSL, on the other hand, can connect faster because it is a different technology.

kB = kilobytes
kb = kilobits
k by itself is the same as kB

1 byte = 8 bits
kilo = thousand

1 byte = 8 bits
1 kilobyte = 1024 bytes
1 megabyte = 1024 kilobytes

Modem speeds are measured in kilobits per second.

Uploads are slower than downloads because the connection is asynchronous. Because people do more downloading than uploading, ISPs make downloads faster and uploads slower on purpose.
