Well I am entirely urinated off (No word censorship here). There is now a nice, shiny virus out there with my mod's name on it. By all means if you think you can cheat by getting the mod early off of some file sharing program, go ahead. Try and get rid of it afterwards, as it is a very smart VIRUS!

Thanks goes to Anakin for bringing this to my attention. I would like to warn you that your system is now currently infected with this very virus (yes, it is a virus, no matter what your antivirus says). Sorry if I sound mean but I am pretty angry at this. Here's the story...

Anakin talks to me on ICQ (well, I'm on trillian at the time). He asks a few questions about the mod, I try to answer them. He then asks if he could have the mod to see if it's "awesome", I said no, but he says never mind, because he has found it. I'm really confused and asks him what he means. He says he found it on a "file-sharing" program called Grokster.

At this point, I'm a little worried, and a little ticked off at how my mod got on a file sharing program, that is if it is legitimate. He downloads it and opens it, it's a zip with with a load of exe's. This is not how a mod would look like when it would be released but anyway... They are all called virtual enterprise1,2,3,etc.exe that is they were called virtual enterprise with a number after it. He runs some and says that it installs something and during the installation, it shows him some screenshots. Screenshots of places that haven't been finished, although they could be old ones that were taken before that map was demolished and restarted. (i.e. the bridge). I ask him to send me the zip (called virtual enterprise mod.zip). He did, and I got it. I scanned it with my antivirus and it came up clean (just as it did for Anakin). I ran one and nothing happened. A little worried now that this is a virus, but regardless I ran another, still nothing. Now I'm sure its a virus. It's funny how I got nothing when Anakin says that he got an installation with screenshots.

(I don't want to accuse Anakin or anything, I'm just really angry)

I told anakin that I taught it was a virus and then signed off and disconnected the internet. This is where I find the beginning of the fiendish cleverness of this virus. I try to run a scan on them again, quick took 2 seconds, nothing. I try to get the latest definitions when all of a sudden, bam, Norton suddenly vanishes. I try again, and it turns off again. Apparently this virus has some sort of self protection, if it finds a Virus scanner on, it will turn it off. I could only get it to stay for 10 seconds, max! I leave it till today to sort it out.

Well the battle commences. I delete everything I knew was related to the virus but it still doesn't work. Thanks goes to The Analog Kid, for pointing me to an online web based Anti-Virus scanner (http://www.antivirus.com/). It found all traces of the virus, and proved that it came from the virtual enterprise zip (because I had forgotten to get rid of the original and it pointed it out). Well, it couldn't delete them itself but it told me what to delete. I deleted the original zip, but the actual virus was in a file in my windows folder, and was in use so I couldn't delete it.

I think, no bother, I'll just go to DOS and delete it there. But NO....this virus is tooo smart for that! Apparently, it wouldn't let me into DOS, it tries to load but stops with a blank screen and just a flashing _
Well, I try and try to get in but somehow end up in safe mode (dunno how, I didn't go to the menu). Well, in safe mode, this file isn't in use! So BAM, That bugger is GONE! Empty the Recycle Bin Happy

Norton now stays on, I got the latest definitions and scanned my Hard Drive, came up with a clean bill of health! Thank God!

Anakin, I'd suggest you do the same, and the rest, this is a warning. Don't Download Anything I didn't announce! This is a Virus, don't get it!

Virus - The Virtual Enterprise Virus
Filename - virtual enterprise mod.zip
Syntoms - Non functioning Virus Scanner. Inability to go to DOS.
What is does - Unknown

Is the only way to get this by downloading the file, or has it travelled over the net? And was Anakin looking for the file on purpose, how did he find it? Not accusing him at all. I'm still going to use that online antivirus just incase.

He talked to me about it. I thought he was talking about Enterprise NX-01 mod. This urinates me off more than an argument with Carlos. Is there anything that can be done to stop this guy from spreading his virus?

You know the problem with this, other than the fact that it's a virus, it's another global announcement, and the Virtual Game forum is so crowded.

3 global announcements
3 announcements
4 stickys

That's 10!

And they're all needed!

Kevin: "It to crowded here. There are too many stickys and stuff, carnt sammo do somthing about them."

I doubt it is a member. Maybe there is a connection between the person who made the virus and the day hundreds of people came here.

Do any of u ppl have Windows ME? If so, u are safe, because u can simply restore the system to another time entirely, or boot into safe mode as well, or use the startup disk to scan the system registery and restore all files from DOS... Cool! Grin

I used to have ME, but after about a year it got all buggy and I couldn't do anything anymore, so I tossed it and installed 98. Now we run XP on all our computers.

I have windows 98 on all of the computers that are running at my house (2 computers and a portable one)

in other words, I don't have windows ME

I don't like windows XP because it probably wouldn't run any of my computer games

Yes, there are some programs that don't run on XP. The only program I use that doesn't work under XP is the software for my scanner. XP has it's own scanning software, but the buttons on my scanner don't work with it.

But Windows 98 is not supported by Microsoft anymore, so I switched to XP. I miss Win98, but XP has enough nice features to keep me smiling. Grin

heres an idea, why don't they put winXP in the scrap heap, and go back to Win98, and try again and put something in it so that games from previous versions of windows would work

That's a stupid idea. They put Win98 in the scrap heap and designed WinXP so that it could run most programs. Anything that doesn't work can sometimes be made to work with compatibility mode.

Sometimes it takes a while before Windows ME starts messing up. We had one computer running for a year on Win ME before it started having problems. My Dad ran it on his laptop and never had problems. The only reason he switched to Windows XP on his laptop is because he liked the faster booting.

Macs have their uses. We used to have a Mac, but then IBM invented the PC. LOL! Seriously though, without Macs, StarTrek would have sucked.
