Moore's Law will hold until 2017. At that point, microprocessors won't be able to go any faster without a major technological breakthrough. Assuming we are still using transistor-based CPUs in 2012, which is 9 and a half years from now, or 114 months, current processor speeds will have doubled 6.333... times. The Pentium 4 processor is now available at 2.53 GHz. In 2012, we will have CPUs that can run faster than 162 GHz. My best guess would be that I would probably have a 166 GHz processor, several gigabytes of memory, several terabytes of hard drive space, a kick-butt graphics card, with peripherals on USB and input devices wireless. I would be on a gigabit network with a two-way satellite Internet connection. My home computer would interface with my car, and maybe even my clothing. I don't know what games I would have, but I would probably have those glasses that make everything 3D. You can get them already, but they are US$100.

explain to me what Moore's law is, I never heard of that law, and I know it doesn't entirely mean the laws that you see in courtrooms

never mind, I think I figured it out, is this moore's law

Moore's Law /morz law/ prov.

The observation that the logic density of silicon integrated circuits has closely followed the curve (bits per square inch) = 2^(t - 1962) where t is time in years; that is, the amount of information storable on a given amount of silicon has roughly doubled every year since the technology was invented. This relation, first uttered in 1964 by semiconductor engineer Gordon Moore (who co-founded Intel four years later) held until the late 1970s, at which point the doubling period slowed to 18 months. The doubling period remained at that value through time of writing (late 1999). Moore's Law is apparently self-fulfilling. The implication is that somebody, somewhere is going to be able to build a better chip than you if you rest on your laurels, so you'd better start pushing hard on the problem. See also Parkinson's Law of Data and Gates's Law.

Yay! Carlos figured out how to find things on his own! Na na!

Tip of the day: Next time, search before you ask. This is considered standard procedure on USENET. On USENET, people who don't search before asking get flamed. Fortunately for you flaming is not allowed here. Wink

whenever someone (in history) tried to say what the future would look like he was VERY WRONG
a couple of years back thebest minds sayed that in the year 2000 the world would only need 2 (two) computers.... yea right have a look around you!!!
so a prognosis is impossible!!!!!

That's not including the three computers in the bathroom that have been cannibalized. (Yes, we have computers in the bathroom. It's not used for a bathroom, but a change room for the pool and hot tub facilities. We have so much junk in our house that any unused floor space becomes a storage area.)

You are not 100% correct. We have 3 VCRS. They are not lazer mouses, but optical mice. We have TONS of headphones. We have two printers useable and three in storage. I don't know what you mean by computer batteries. Window fans don't count, and the last thing you mentioned is an air conditioner. No more going off topic. This is supposed to be about computers in the future.
