Actually, U.S.S. means "United States Ship". At least I think it does in real life. Don't know about in Star Trek.

Yes It means that in REAL life, but you honestly think an intergalactic society would be based around the united states? In star trek its United Star Ship (or united space ship, not sure which)

NCC stands for Naval Construction Contract

The meaning of USS in StarTrek hasn't been firmly established, but the two that Dobberman mentioned are the ones that have been used.

What I think is that the creators of Star Trek, who lived in the US, never felt like coming up with a new abbreviation so they just used USS.

According to the encyclopedia, NCC doesn't stand for anything. It was devised by Matt Jefferies, art director the for the first StarTrek series. Jefferies, who is a pilot, based NCC on 20th-century aircraft registration codes. In such 20th-century usage, an "N" first letter refers to an aircraft registered in the United States of America. A "C" second letter refers to a civil (non-military) aircraft. Jefferies added a second "C", just because he thought it looked better.

The same goes for NX registry numbers, "X" meaning experimental.

Starbase 5 always comes up here and uses my encyclopedia. I have the second edition on my shelf, which is what I use all the time, and the first edition stored away. I wish I had the third edition. :-(
