I like roleplaying quite a bit, and I started a clan around it, It's rather small, and the website is still under construction. I'm wondering if anyone can help us get a server up, that's one thing we're having trouble with. And I'm also wondering how many people here roleplay.

LOL, a lot of us roleplay. That's what the Virtual Game is all about! Wink

I'd be glad to help you get a server up. What did you have in mind?

Well, the clan name is FRP, we don't want a 24 hour server or anything, maybe just one up in the afternoon. I'll get some other members in here, I don't feel good speaking for a group of people myself...

Ok, first of all, I've never heard of a server that ISN'T up 24 hours (well, I have, but not intentionally). Having one up only in the afternoon might be hard to do, as I can't think of anyone who would do that. The only possible way would be to host it on your own computer, assuming your ISP allows you to run a server (probably not, check your contract), that way it's only up when your computer is turned on.

Second, how much space do you think you'll need? Are you looking for a dedicated server, or to use space on an existing server? Dedicated servers are quite expensive, and if you only need a few MB of space you can get some on somebody's server for quite cheap.

Well, If a 24 hour server is easier, than okay. And we really don't need a dedicated server, just so long as it works. I have a subdomain on one of my friends server, Is that the kind of space I'd need to host a server?

Yes, a subdomain will work just fine. Now you just have to hope that your friend has enough space for your web site. Good luck with your clan!

Well, once the web site is finished, that's what you would upload. You said it's under construction. Who is constructing it?

Well, I am, Freeservers is what I'm using for the site, But I'm using my subdomain for the server, but I mean, to host an EF server on the web, I'd need to upload a substantial ammount of code, right?

I'm not quite sure what you mean. Do you mean to say you started an EF clan and you want to start an EF server for your clan to play on?

You know now that i think of it. RPGing on a actual ef server would be kick-ass, You could just use the talk to target command. That would be sooo cool.

Sorry, just wanted to say that.

Well, That might work, it was either find an RPing server, or making one ourselves. I'll go check out Gamespy and report back. Oh, and it's not really a clan, it's a group, we're going to develop RPing maps and so forth.

rpg is role playing game

it was designed for assimilation, but some people use it for rpg

it has a bridge, ready room, conference lounge, transporter, crew quarters, main engineering, shuttlebay, deflector control, cargo bay, and more and several map secrets

its a new version of ctf_deralict
and I know all the secrets of ctf_deralict2

How do you use it for RPG? What does that mean? Use a multiplayer map online and just walk between places like a VG?

Yes, it is, I like it because it is more realistic than a VG, but you are limited by the features of the ship, and much is still left to the imaginination. Like:

Logalot: I'm going to eject the core!
Scooter: But we will be stuck here!
Simmo66: Why are you doing this? I want the truth!
Carlos: You can't handle the truth!
Logalot: Ummm... Okay, the core is gone, just eh, pretend it isn't there...
All: Oh, right.

That kind of thing, Daedalus2 is another good RPing map, although the ship is older(MUCH older) and it has less features. Anyway, The kind of map FRP would make is something with features such as turning red alert on and so forth.

I don't know, any for a trial run. If we like it, maybe we can choose a map later, or even (dare I suggest?) someone make maps for the VG.

I started a map for the VG when it began, but it didn't go far off the ground.

yes, thats like the kind of rpging I do in some EF servers
you can destroy lots of things in deralict, deralict 2, daedalus, and daedalus2, just shoot stuff, eg. shoot the comm panels or shoot the escape hatches

Ooh, I have actuyaly put quite a bit of thought into this. THe map on effiles.com U.S.S. Nostromo would be PERFECT all the doors open, it has engineering bridge, etc. And if we were going to be going onto a planet we could just change maps and have bots be the bad guys.

This would be sooo cool. Hey, how many of us think we should try this. *raises hand*

Okay, here's a little overview of what hapened:

it was earlier today when: This topic started and they all started talking about it. We all went on mIRC to try and set it up for a trial run. We had some trouble setting it up. first sporto tried to set it up but couldn't. So dobberman hosted it.

We started out in the map Nostromo, it was good for RPGing. But, we had some problems with people coming onto the map that weren't supposed to we let a couple of them on because they sounded like they wanted to RPG. Dobberman tried to connect (he was serving it) but he couldn't because of lag, the rest of the time he talked to us through the console (whom I will refer to as god). Then Carlos_technology kept on trying to make everybody watch him while he used the jetpack (grrr). Simmo and I were probably the only ones trying to get it to work. Then Someone (i can't remember who) voted to change maps to the bridge of voyager. Thats when it all went wrong....

Some guy joined and god had trouble booting him (or we had trouble talking to god). Then Simmo left a few minutes in, this left me with Carlos and some other guy. it got way too boring then, with only three people and a very small space it was no fun. This is the point where i quit.

Well, i think that about covers it. It would have been great fun if we would have had 10 people in the server who REALLY wanted to RPG.

I tried to get in, but it kept saying "connecting". My theory is that there's too many jumps from British Columbia to Ireland, so we should find a more central location. Eastern North America prehaps?

As for people coming in that don't belong, we'll have to password protect our server next time so that only authorized members have access.

It was good fun in my opinion.

It was funny how we stood on the bridge, sitting on top of the command chair.

And i was flying on the UFO around the ship, and started shooting Luke through the hole in the bridge roof and he had no idea where it was coming from Grin

But something that really annoyed me was Carlos' constant use of the jetpack, his lack of reporting to the conference room when told, and constantly trying to get everyone watch him with the nude seven skin What ever!

I really seem to be getting into the RPG thing lately. Last night i was on the EF one, and i just hosted my own Bridge Commander RPG too. It turned out a bit weird but it was fun (but eventually someone connected and it overloaded the computer and the game just stopped dead.) Although I did manage to host 6 players (including me) with no problem.

I could think of hosting the ones here to see if I can handle it or anything. Wha?

And when we make our role playing things on EF, we should name them "[KSI ONLY]Virtual" or something like that. Our little "clan" thing could be named KSI in honor of Vanhal's thing maybe. Wha? Smile

We have a roleplaying forum. It's called Virtual Game Comments.

Anyways, I've figured out how to password protect the game and I wrote a dedicated server cfg script which I'm going to test out today.

Here's the code for password protection:
set g_needpass 1
set g_password "<type your password in here>"

/password pass
(where "pass" is the password)

scooter, what is your IP so that people will know to get to your server to test the passwordlock
and what will the password be
and when will you have the server
and whats the server name

I'm having some trouble figuring out how to make my server visible to the outside world, but keep your eyes open for "[KSI] Private server". My IP address is 24.76.156.95 but I haven't been able to connect to myself thru the outside yet.

EDIT: It works!!!!!! I can connect to myself thru the outside world! I didn't see my server in the GameSpy list, but when I specify the ip address it works perfectly! I'm going to leave it running for an hour, so try it out!

Well, Logalot and I tested my server successfully after a few tries. It's down for now, but I'll put it back up when I get home from church.

Sorry to double-post, but I need to get the attention of all those online right now. I'm home, and I'm in the chat. My server will be coming back up soon.

EDIT: Well, it seems we're having some troubles. People who can't get onto my server, I can't get onto the servers they CAN go on. The error message is always "bad default.cfg". Anybody know how to fix that?
